Lightning wing Radek Smolenak on his Russia experience: "I hated it there"

As expected, the Tampa Bay Lightning signed power forward Radek Smolenak to a one-year, two-way contract. What really was interesting today was listening to Smolenak describe his short relationship with Nizhnekamsk of Russia's Kontinental Hockey League.

Smolenak, 22, signed there in May after his entry-level contract expired with Tampa Bay. Asked what happened to cause his contract there to be terminated, Smolenak said, "I hated it there." And while he called the entire experience "a great one," he added, "I'm happy I'm not there anymore." ... Read more

Tampa Bay Lightning training camp roster reduced to 39; more cuts coming Saturday

Sorry it took so long to get this posted, but we flew three hours today from Winnipeg to Norfolk, Va., for Friday night's scrimmage and had to get two stories written for the Saturday newspaper, my actual job, as quickly as possible as we got here at 5 p.m. Traffic in Norfolk is tough.

Anyway, the Tampa Bay Lightning's training camp roster was reduced to 39 on Friday as left wing Radek Smolenak was claimed off waivers by the Blackhawks and the Lightning sent center Carter Ashton back to Lethbridge of the Western Hockey League. Had Smolenak not been claimed, he would have been sent to AHL Norfolk. ... Read more

Tampa Bay Lightning claims LW Radek Smolenak off waivers from the Blackhawks

The Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday claimed right wing Radek Smolenak off waivers from the Blackhawks. Smolenak was lost on waivers to Chicago as the Lightning cut down its roster during training camp. When he was put on waivers by the Blackhawks, Tampa Bay had first crack at claiming him. Smolenak, who played one regular-season game with Chicago and had zero points and five penalty minutes, will be assigned to AHL Norfolk.
