The Tampa Bay Lightning opens its eight-game preseason schedule (including a scrimmage against AHL Norfolk) with an 8:30 p.m. game against the Stars at American Airlines Center in Dallas. Almost all the big names will not make the trip. Instead, the Martys and Vinnys and Stammers will make their debuts Friday at home against the Thrashers.

Here's who will play against Dallas: ... Read more

GM Steve Yzerman says Tampa Bay Lightning likely to carry eight defensemen

With the signing of Mike Lundin on Tuesday, the Tampa Bay Lightning has eight defensemen with one-way contracts for next season. It might seem a bit much. Most teams generally suit up six blue-liners per game. But general manager Steve Yzerman said there is a good chance Tampa Bay will carry eight defensemen on the NHL roster. ... Read more

Paul Ranger will not be at Lightning camp and the GM says roster set (for now)

Not that this is a huge surprise, but Tampa Bay Lightning general manager Steve Yzerman said on Wednesday that defenseman Paul Ranger, who has been  away from the team since October because of personal issues, will not be at training camp when it opens Sept. 17 at Brandon.

"I had a chance to talk with Paul and we're entering training camp under the assumption Paul won't be part of it," Yzerman said. ... Read more

The Tampa Bay Lightning put forwards Marc Pouliot and Niklas Persson on waivers. Persson previously was cut from the preseason roster.

A flurry of moves and the Tampa Bay Lightning's roster is as good as done (updated)

This is pretty much the same post except left wing Johan Harju, as expected, was assigned to AHL Norfolk.

The Tampa Bay Lightning's roster isn't officially set. It has until 3 p.m. Wednesday until is must file with the league, but with Tuesday's moves, we can speculate with reasonable certainty as to how the roster will look.

Here is a pretty good guess with some caveats to follow: ... Read more

Eric Perrin leaves the Tampa Bay Lightning gracefully, says he's likely headed to Finland

Eric Perrin, who on Tuesday was released from his tryout with the Tampa Bay Lightning, had nothing but good things to say about his time trying to earn his third stint with the team, and that he likely will play this season in Finland.

I write a bit about Perrin in Wednesday's paper, but, as I've always said, so much of an interview never sees the light of day. And with Perrin, 34, having such a rich history with the Lightning, figured all of what he had to say would be interesting. ... Read more

Tampa Bay Lightning stands pat, so roster is set; Mathieu Roy clears waivers

Defenseman Mathieu Roy cleared waivers Wednesday and was assigned to AHL Norfolk. The Tampa Bay Lightning also did not make any waiver claims, which means the opening day roster is set at what we speculated on Tuesday unless a trade comes out of nowhere. No word on if defenseman Mattias Ohlund will be put on injured reserve. Whether he is or not, he will not play Saturday against the Thrashers, and might not play next week's games wither against Montreal, Philadelphia and Florida.

So, once again, here is the lineup: ... Read more
