Friday afternoon news dump
TSN was in town to see Stamkos on Friday, or at least the Lightning's marketing campaign around the player they will make the top selection of the NHL draft on June 20. The Lightning swathed its employees in "Seen Stamkos" gear and hung banners from the arena ceiling to provide the Canadian sports network some B-roll for its coverage.
Stamkos was not in town. Hopefully he wasn't somewhere being made to do this again. ... Read more
Stamkos on line with St. Louis and Lecavalier; Hall hurt
Interim Lightning coach Rick Tocchet said top pick Steven Stamkos would get his chance to show what he can do.
And Tocchet has followed through; One day after Stamkos played more than 15 minutes against the Hurricanes, he was placed on the wing on a line with Marty St. Louis and Vinny Lecavalier for Monday's practice. Though Tocchet said it's not "set in stone," he thought it'd be a confidence builder for Stamkos, who said he's excited for the opportunity.
"Now," Stamkos said. "The pressure is on me." ... Read more
Steven Stamkos: first NHL brawl broadens his horizons
Rookie C Steven Stamkos wasn’t spoiling for his first NHL fight, didn’t pick out the biggest and/or baddest bully in the schoolyard to make the point that he wouldn’t be pushed around. But he still seemed pleasantly contented two days after a hard check incited fisticuffs with the Rangers’ Nikolai Zherdev at the St. Pete Times Forum.
Stamkos, who had two notable tussles in juniors, said he inherited his edge from his father, Chris, and learned his moves from watching hockey his whole life. ... Read more
Steven Stamkos stepping up game as Rick Tocchet looks for performers. Smart
Rookie Steven Stamkos continues to play well at a very opportune moment, with his coach looking for results and ready to reward players who provide them. Stamkos a Young Star, scratched
Lightning rookie Steven Stamkos was named on Friday to participate in the Young Stars Game played during All-Star weekend in Montreal. The Young Stars game this season will feature sophomore players against rookies in a three-on-three contest, Jan. 24 at the Bell Centre. It is the first time the rookies vs. sophomore format will be used. That good news was tempered later in the morning when the struggling Stamkos was scratched from tonight's game with the Ducks.
On a scale of 1-10, Tampa Bay Lightning's Steven Stamkos says Gary Roberts, as a trainer, is a 9.5
We all knew Steven Stamkos was a dedicated athlete. We saw it last season, when rather than sitting and sulking through his scratches, he used the time to work out and study the game. The result, was a terrific second half that legitimized the No. 1 overall draft pick the Tampa Bay Lightning used to get him.
With that in mind, it was almost expected to hear Stamkos tell the story of how he left immediately to get home after playing in teammate Mike Smith's charity golf tournament over the summer because he didn't want to miss a workout. Stamkos already had stayed with Smith the night prior to the tournament. But instead of hanging out after, Stamkos drove home so he would not miss a workout with former teammate Gary Roberts.
"I knew if I stayed, I wouldn't have gotten much sleep," Stamkos said. ... Read more
Line of Marty St. Louis, Steven Stamkos and Ryan Malone seems primed to pick up where it left off
There was plenty to like at Monday's two scrimmages at the Ice Sports Forum. A lot of the prospects, who were pitted against the NHL players, showed a lot of why all of a sudden Tampa Bay's feeder system isn't as shallow as it once was.
Goaltender Jaroslav Janus, who is playing for a contract, was terrific in two games, stopping 25 of 28 shots; center James Wright had a goal and an assist and had six shots in the first of the two scrimmages in which he played; right wing Carter Ashton can't stop going to the net and had the hit of the day when he ran over 6-foot-7 defenseman Vladimir Mihalik; center Richard Panik did not get a point but had three shots on goal and showed some skill; left wing Alex Tanguay had three goals in his first-ever game action for the Lightning; and right wing Steve Downie wasn't bad playing with Tanguay and center Vinny Lecavalier. ...
