Minor trade
The Lightning picked up forwards Kyle Wanvig and Stephen Baby (pronounced BAH-bee) from the Thrashers in exchange for defenseman Andy Delmore and right wing Andre Deveaux.
Wanving, 26, is a former second-round draft pick of the Wild. He was signed by the Thrashers as a free agent and played for AHL Chicago where he had 10 goals an 21 points in 26 games. He and Baby, a 6-foot-5, 230-pounder, will be assigned to AHL Springfield. ... Read more
Are these guys for real?
So, the best I can figure, the Lightning, even in its Cup season, never won 12 games in a 14-game stretch which is just what this bunch can do Friday in New York.
The interesting thing will be to see what general manager Jay Feaster will do at the trade deadline. If he's serious about getting a puck-moving defenseman who also has some grit, he better get in line. Making it more difficult is that there are very few teams ready to sell. The shootout has put everybody into the playoff race, so many teams are looking to buy. ... Read more
Trade talk
So, does the idea of trading for Los Angeles' Brent Sopel or Columbus' Bryan Berard get anybody excited? Not that anything is imminent, and it may never happen, but considering the puck-moving defensemen available right now, those two seem to be the best fits for Tampa Bay. The talk is both can be had for draft picks or prospects. Both have about $800,000 left on their contracts for this season, and that is manageable under the cap. ... Read more
Trade talk
It's a week before the trade deadline and there is no indication the Lightning are any closer to making a deal than they were a while ago. Feaster has said he wants to keep the locker room together and would rather trade draft picks and prospects than a body off the roster. Feaster also has kept consistent that he is after either a puck-moving defenseman or a third- or fourth-line grit guy. ... Read more
What's the verdict on trade?
Hey, everyone. This is Eduardo Encina, the Times' backup Lightning writer. After writing the story in today's Times about the Lightning's trade to acquire defenseman Shane O'Brien, I've received some mixed reaction about the trade. ... Read more
Youth traded for veteran defenseman
The Lightning on Monday acquired veteran NHL defenseman Lukas Krajicek in a trade that shipped away two players who just a year ago were key young players in the Tampa Bay organization.
The Lightning sent defenseman Shane O'Brien and right wing Michel Ouellet to Vancouver for Krajicek and minor-league left wing Juraj Simek. ... Read more
For Tampa Bay Lightning, what to do with nine defensemen?
Barring a trade, when the Tampa Bay Lightning laces them up for Saturday's season opener against the Thrashers in Atlanta, it will have nine defensemen on the roster, meaning three will be scratched. Even coach Rick Tocchet said it is not the ideal situation. But Tampa Bay GM Brian Lawton said he is in no rush to thin the ranks because, if you recall last season when the blue line was dismantled by injuries, it's not a bad idea in the short term to have a few extra bodies around. ... Lawton: Report of Rangers contacting Tampa Bay about Lecavalier "completely false"
The Vinny Lecavalier trade rumors seemingly never end, and the latest report fittingly included the Rangers as the Lightning is headed to New York for a game Tuesday.
The Ottawa Sun reported Sunday, citing an unnamed league source, that Rangers GM Glen Sather contacted Tampa Bay GM Brian Lawton in an effort to spark trade talks for Lecavalier, the Lightning captain who has a no-trade clause.
That report, according to Lawton, is "completely false." Lawton laughed and said he hasn't even spoken to Sather in weeks. ... Read more
Tampa Bay Lightning trades D Andrej Meszaros to the Flyers for second-rounder
The Tampa Bay Lightning has traded defenseman Andrej Meszaros to the Flyers for a second-round pick in 2012. The Lightning will clear $4 million of cap space for next season and take $18.25 million off its future payroll obligations.
It is the first trade for general manager Steve Yzerman as the Lightning's new general manager. ... Read more
Lightning acquire two prospects from Toronto in exchange for defenseman Matt Lashoff
The Lightning continued to build organizational depth and create more financial flexibility by acquiring a pair of minor league prospects, right wing Alex Berry and forward Stefano Giliati, from Toronto in exchange for defenseman Matt Lashoff.
Lashoff, 23, who appeared in just five games last season for the Lightning and 63 NHL games overall for Boston and Tampa Bay, was one of eight defenseman on a one-way contract, which means he'd draw an NHL salary even if he played in Norfolk.
