Competition on defense (maybe) and forward (likely) will define Tampa Bay Lightning training camp; and other tidbits
Looking over his team on two sheets of ice on Tuesday -- the rookie camp on one at the Ice Sports Forum in Brandon and the vets skating in pre-camp workouts to on the other -- Lightning GM Brian Lawton could say one thing about training camp that begins Sept. 12, there will be competition.
In fact, he said it already has started as far as the rookies are concerned.
"This is live fire, have at it," Lawton said he told his players.
But how much competition will there be, really? Lawton said there are two spots open on defense for the Lightning, but given the roster, it seems it's going to be very tough to crack the top eight, and Lawton has indicated he likely will keep eight defensemen on the roster. He also said up to five or six players will vie for the final spot on the top two lines already manned by Vinny Lecavalier, Steven Stamkos, Marty St. Louis, Ryan Malone and Alex Tanguay. Where: Ice Sports Forum, Brandon; St. Pete Times Forum, Tampa.
Watch: Workouts are free and open to the public.
Parking: Free at the Ice Sports Forum and in the VIP West lot at the Times Forum.
Autographs: Players sometimes sign when coming off the ice.
Fan parties: 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Sunday at the Ice Sports Forum (entertainment, fan land, games); 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Times Forum (free lunch).

Former star Adam Oates does Tampa Bay Lightning coach and buddy Rick Tocchet "a favor"
One of the games greatest passers will be on the ice during the Tampa Bay Lightning's training camp, helping coach the power play. Adam Oates, sixth all time with 1,079 assists, will participate as "a favor to me," coach Rick Tocchet said. Officially Adding Oates to the staff could come later. Perhaps this is kind of an audition.
For now, Tocchet said, his former teammate with the Flyers, Bruins and Capitals will be working for free. ... Read more
