Downie a late scratch Tuesday with an upper body injury
Update: Lightning coach Guy Boucher quipped Downie was a "very surprising scratch," even to himself. But Boucher said while Downie wanted to play, it was an "organizational call" to sit him Tuesday to let his back rest and help prevent further injury. Downie is expected to be back Thursday in Washington.
Boucher said having C Dominic Moore back helped make the decision easier to sit Downie.
“Instead of having him get worse and eventually losing him for two-three weeks, I think it’s important to do it now,” Boucher said.
Developing: Lightning right wing Steve Downie was a late scratch from Tuesday night's game with Toronto due to an unspecified upper body injury.
Downie had been battling a back injury, but played the past few games, and said Tuesday morning he planned to play tonight. Coach Guy Boucher said the same thing, praising Downie's toughness.
But about a half hour before the game, it was announced Downie would be out with what's likely a different injury. We'll keep you posted when we get more details.
