Lightning picks forward Dana Tyrell
The Lightning used its first pick in the draft, No. 47 overall, to take junior forward Dana Tyrell, 18. The 5-10, 185-pounder scored 30 goals and had 56 points and 51 penalty minutes in 72 games last season for Prince George of the Western Hockey League.
The NHL's Central Scouting bureau ranks Tyrell the No. 15 North American skater, up from 42 in mid season. Its report says Tyrell, "competes every shift'' and is "very responsible defensively'' but needs to improve "acceleration and puck possession.''
