Lightning reassigns Lauri Tukonen; training camp down to 41 players

21

September

The Tampa Bay Lightning announced it had reassigned right wing Lauri Tukonen to Lukko Rauma of the Finnish elite league. That reduces the players in training camp to 41.

Tukonen, 23, who had knee surgery at the end of last season and had another arthroscopic procedure at the beginning of August, did not get into a preseason game.

Other tidbits from the morning skate:

Coach Rick Tocchet acknowledged he doesn't want to get too ahead of himself, but he still can't stop talking about rookie defenseman Victor Hedman who arguably was the Lightning's best player in its first two preseason games. "He's not as nasty as Chris Pronger, but Chris Pronger," Tocchet said when asked after whom Hedman seems to pattern his game. "The way he pokes the puck. The way he defends." ... Tocchet said he has not formulated the game group for Tuesday's game in Everett, Wash., against the Coyotes. ... The game is expected to be a sellout at 7,000-seat Brandt Center. ... The arena is an intimate space with 30 ads plastered across the ice. Curious how long it takes for the NHL to allow ads anywhere and everywhere on the ice. ... Defenseman Matt Walker, bothered by a minor lower-body issue, will play his first preseason game. ... Center James Wright, who is from Saskatoon, said he will have six family members at the game; mom, dad, two aunts and two cousins. "It's pretty great for them," Wright said of getting to watch him play. ... Tocchet said he will split the goaltending duties tonight between Antero Niittymaki and Riku Helenius. But beginning with Tuesday's game against Phoenix, goalies will play 60 minutes.

Vinny Lecavalier is not playing tonight, noteworthy only because he attended prep school about 25 miles away in Wilcox at Athol Murray College of Notre Dame. Asked if there was any discussion about letting Lecavalier play, Tocchet said, "I didn't know about that to be honest with you." Not that Lecavalier would have played anyway. Tonight's game is filled with players trying to make the team than the established stars.
