Michalek says hitting St. Louis in face with his stick was an accident
Penguins defenseman Zbynek Michalek said that he didn't mean to hit Lightning wing Marty St. Louis in the face with his stick during Wednesday's second period, calling the incident - which led St. Louis to need a double root canal following the game - an accident.
St. Louis had felt Michalek was "careless" with his stick when, while falling to the ice, it swung around and smacked him in the mouth.
"I lost my balance as he did, and my stick swang and hit him in the face," Michalek said after Friday's morning skate. "If he was up it wouldn’t happen, but he was falling down, and hit him right in the face. It was bad luck, accidents happen. It was the first game and I don’t think anybody could expect things like that to happen...
“My stick wasn’t high it was just bad luck it hit him right in the face. I certainly didn’t mean to hit him in the face, but that’s what ended up. But it’s part of the game I guess."
