Norfolk Admirals sign RW and former NHL All-Star Mark Parrish to tryout contract
Here is an interesting signing given the Tampa Bay Lightning's inability to find a consistent right wing for Vinny Lecavalier's line. The Norfolk Admirals, the Lightning's AHL affiliate, has signed former NHL All-Star Mark Parrish to a professional tryout contract.
Parrish, 32, has appeared in 704 NHL games with 216 goals and 169 assists. He appeared in the 2002 All-Star game. He had his only 30-goal season in 2001-02 for the Islanders.
Parrish, trying to re-ignite a career in which he averaged 26 goals for the Islanders from 2001-06, was cut from Canucks camp in September. He had been there as a tryout and had two assists in four games.
After Parrish had his biggest seasons, he signed a five-year, $13.25 million deal with the Wild, but was bought out of that contract after scoring just 35 goals in two seasons. He had eight goals in 44 games last season for the Stars.
The Lightning has been floundering trying to find someone to work consistently with Lecavalier and left wing Alex Tanguay. But Lightning assistant general manager Tom Kurvers said that situation wasn't the impetus for signing Parrish.
"You know, it really doesn't connect," Kurvers said. "It really wasn't talked about. ... It's just to have enough players to absorb any injuries. He wasn't signed with Vinny's line in mind."
Yet, if Parrish works out and is signed to a contract, it will give the Lightning an asset with proved NHL ability and another potential option for a club that right now has just 12 forwards.
"He has a proven track record," Kurvers said of Parrish, adding, "You try and select guys on the outside looking in and you hope guys are able to find the spark in their games that created their NHL careers in the first place. It's totally up to Mark Parrish with how he performs. We all know he has NHL ability."
Professional tryout contracts are for a maximum 25 games. Parrish's salary will be $28,000. He can be released any time during the contract with his salary proportionally reduced.
