Physical left wing Radek Smolenak agrees to terms with the Tampa Bay Lightning

Czech left wing Radek Smolenak, released from his KHL contract earlier this summer, has agreed to terms with the Lightning on a two-way, one-year deal, Tampa Bay general manager Brian Lawton said on Friday.

Smolenak, a 6-foot-2, 180-pounder, played six games for the Lightning last season with one assist and 10 penalty minutes. After his entry-level contract expired, he left for what probably was a more lucrative contract in Russia with Nizhnekamsk. But Smolenak was released from that contract during the summer.

Lawton said the Lightning is waiting the final paperwork from the KHL team to document Smolenak is no longer its property so he can sign with Tampa Bay.

Smolenak, 22, from Prague, had 24 goals and 49 points with 165 penalty minutes in 71 games last season for AHL Norfolk. He will be one of 52 players at Lightning training camp, which begins Saturday. He could challenge for a roster spot on a team looking for some physical play on its third and fourth lines.
