Posturing or pessimism?: Agent says signing Sean Bergenheim by July 1 "not going to be easy"

There likely will be a lot of this kind of thing going around as agents jockey to get the best deals for their clients, so take such pronouncements for what they are worth. Still, it was interesting to hear agent Todd Diamond make it sound as if Tampa Bay Lightning forward Sean Bergenheim, one of the best stories of the postseason, might be on his way to becoming an unrestricted free agent.

Diamond on Friday said the sides have “right now agreed to disagree” on a new contract.

Asked if he believed a deal could get done before July 1, when Bergenheim hits the open market, Diamond said, “It’s not going to be easy, but stranger things can happen.”

Bergenheim, 27, who made $700,000 last season, had 14 goals, 29 points in 80 games, but exploded for nine goals, 11 points in 16 games in the playoffs.

“There’s no negativity,” Diamond said of the negotiations, “other than putting together a financial package everyone is happy with.”
