Stephane Veilleux's grievance against the Lightning on hold, for now, agent says
The grievance against the Tampa Bay Lightning that the agent for left wing Stephane Veilleux said would be filed today by the NHL Players Association has been put on hold -- for now.
"The PA is still working on the grievance and they want the player to review certain portions of it, and it's becoming quite extensive," Walsh said. "It's not going to change anything. They want to make sure they put something substantial into it."
Walsh said the grievance will be filed as soon as Wednesday but certainly by the end of the week. Players Association spokesman Jonathan Weatherdon said only that "we're currently reviewing the matter."
The dispute centers around surgery that Veilleux is scheduled to undergo today at the Cleveland Clinic for a cyst and nerve impingement, and possibly a torn labrum, in his right shoulder. There is no dispute Veilleux needs the surgery, but Tampa Bay has questioned whether the injury is hockey related as the impingement of the suprascapular nerve is more consistent with athletes who engage in repetitive overhead activities such as throwing a baseball, serving a volleyball or swimming.
Walsh said the injury is clearly hockey related because his client was deemed healthy at the beginning of the season, and the injuries were discovered by the Lightning doctors during routine physicals the day after the regular season ended.
Asked if the dispute could be resolved before the grievance is filed, Walsh said, "You're asking the wrong person. I haven't heard from (the Lightning) all day."
