Tampa Bay Lightning assigns defenseman Lukas Krajicek to AHL Norfolk

The Tampa Bay Lightning on Friday assigned veteran defenseman Lukas Krajicek to AHL Norfolk, the team announced. The move takes Krajicek's $1.475 million salary off Tampa Bay's salary cap number.

The move comes a day after a 3-0 loss to the Red Wings. A Krajicek gaffe clearing the puck from the defensive zone helped lead to Todd Bertuzzi's goal that gave Detroit a 2-0 third-period. Beyond that, Lightning coach Rick Tocchet has been critical of Krajicek's lack of offensive production.

Krajicek has one assist and 21 penalty minutes and averaged 17:31 of ice time.

When Krajicek cleared waivers on Saturday, he said GM Brian Lawton mentioned there was at least one team interested in him. Whether this is a prelude to putting Krajicek on recall waivers is to be seen. If Krajicek is claimed on recall waivers, the claiming team would have to pay half his remaining salary. The Lightning would be responsible for the rest.

The move also comes a day before the holiday roster freeze, which runs through Dec. 27.
