Tampa Bay Lightning center Dominic Moore was fined $2,500 by the league for what appeared to be a shoulder-to-head hit Thursday on the Rangers’ Ruslan Fedotenko. The fine is the largest allowed under the collective bargaining agreement.

Moore’s hit, for which he was given a minor roughing penalty, occurred at 3:05 into the third period. Fedotenko, after about a minute on the ice, had to leave the game and the Rangers said he will not play in today’s game against the Flyers.

Moore, who did not respond to a text message, said Thursday the hit was unintentional and a result of him attempting to establish position in the New York zone to be available to take a shot. And New York’s Daily News reported that an NHL official said there is a replay angle that shows Moore did not make contact with Fedotenko’s jaw. Instead, Moore’s shoulder hit Fedotenko’s stick which hit Fedotenko in the face.

Moore also said the hit was not retaliation for Fedotenko previously running him into the boards, a check for which there was no penalty.

The fine money goes to the players Emergency Assistance Fund.
