The Tampa Bay Lightning claimed Nate Thompson off waivers from the Islanders. The center will join the Lightning, though because of travel likely will not play tonight against the Maple Leafs. With Tampa Bay at the roster limit of 23, expect a corresponding move to be announced later today.

The Tampa Bay Lightning claimed center Nate Thompson off waivers from the New York Islanders today, Executive Vice President and General Manager Brian Lawton announced.

"We are extremely excited to bring Nate into the organization,” Lawton said. “We really feel the team will benefit greatly from his tenacity, physicality and energy as well as his overall ability.  We’re looking forward to seeing him contribute."

Thompson, 6-foot, 207 pounds, has played in 39 games with the Islanders this season, recording a goal and six points with 39 penalty minutes.  He last played for New York on January 9 at Phoenix and has averaged 12:56 in ice time per game this season.  Thompson has played in 86 career NHL games with the Islanders and Boston Bruins, notching three goals and 10 points with 88 penalty minutes.

A native of Anchorage, Alaska, Thompson has played in 216 career AHL games with the Providence Bruins.  He has amassed 35 goals and 80 points during his AHL career. He served as alternate captain for Providence in 2007-08.  Thompson has also played in 16 career Calder Cup Playoff games, recording two assists.

Thompson was drafted by the Bruins in the sixth round, 183rd overall, of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.  He played junior hockey for the Seattle Thunderbirds of the WHL before making his professional debut with Providence in the 2005 Atlantic Division Finals.
