Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Matt Smaby hurt, out of first preseason game
The Tampa Bay Lightning lost defenseman Matt Smaby in the first period of Tuesday's preseason opener against the Stars.
Smaby played just 1:52 of the first period. He was involved in a fight with Brian Sutherby 1:30 into the game. Sutherby got in several good punches, including a big right hand to the back of the head that buckled Smaby. In a subsequent shift, Smaby seemed unsteady on his skates.
The team called Smaby's injury upper body and did not elaborate.
Smaby's fight was one of three in the first period, including Adam Hall's bout with Francis Wathier and Marc Pouliot's scrum with Mathieu Tousignant that was more a wrestling match. A few other bouts of pushing and shoving did not amount to anything.
