Tampa Bay Lightning to donate proceeds of charity game to memorial fund for slain officer Mike Roberts
From the team:
The Tampa Bay Lightning will donate all proceeds from the charity hockey game to be held in conjunction with Fan Fest 2009, presented by Embassy Suites Downtown, on Saturday, August 29 to the Corporal Mike Roberts Memorial Fund.
The game, which features current Lightning players Martin St. Louis, Steven Stamkos, Mattias Ohlund, Victor Hedman, Matt Walker, Andrej Meszaros and Adam Hall, will be held from 5-6 p.m. during Fan Fest. Also scheduled to play are Community Representative Dave Andreychuk, radio/television personality Chris Dingman, Director of Youth Hockey Brian Bradley and Stan Neckar, all former Bolts stars. Playing along side the current and former Lightning players will be the former teammates and friends of Cpl. Roberts.
Cpl. Roberts was killed in the line of duty in Tampa last Wednesday, August 19 during a confrontation with a heavily armed man. Cpl. Roberts had received 33 commendations and awards for his actions over the years. He leaves behind a wife, Cynthia, a 3-year-old son, Adam.
During the game each player’s jersey worn on the ice will be available for auction on the concourse behind section 101. Each player will autograph his jersey following the game. There will also be a memorabilia auction behind section 120. Fans will also be able to make financial donations via donation bowls at numerous locations throughout the St. Pete Times Forum throughout Fan Fest.
Those not able to attend Fan Fest, or looking to donate more, can mail checks, payable to the Tampa Police Memorial Fund, to 411 N. Franklin St., Tampa, FL 33602. Those making donations are asked to write "Cpl. Mike Roberts Memorial Fund" on the memo line of the check. In addition, account No. 538412 has been set up with Tampa Bay Federal Credit Union. Those checks should be made out to Cynthia Roberts or the Tampa Police Memorial Fund. Donations can also be made at any Tampa Bay Federal Credit Union in the Tampa Bay area.
Lightning Fan Fest 2009, presented by the Embassy Suites Downtown, will be held on Saturday, August 29 from 3-8 p.m. at the St. Pete Times Forum and it is free to the public. The event features youth clinics, fan activities, public skating, the first chance for fans to purchase single game tickets, food and drink discounts and more.
