Tampa Bay Lightning GM Yzerman apparently has hired Pat Verbeek as a pro scout
So much for not raiding the Red Wings. Reports out of Detroit say the Tampa Bay Lightning has hired Pat Verbeek as a pro scout. Verbeek spent the past four years as a scout in Detroit. It is the first hire for new Lightning general manager Steve Yzerman, and it could preface another if Yzerman can convince the Wings' capologist Ryan Martin to come to Tampa Bay.
Yzerman, when first hired by Tampa Bay, said he did not intend to raid his former employer. And while he only has made one hire so far, it is clear he is targeting some people, smartly, from an organization many believe to be a model in the NHL.
Verbeek, 46, played 21 seasons for the Devils, Whalers, Rangers, Stars and Red Wings. He was a teammate of Yzerman's from 1999-2001 with Detroit and ended his career with 522 goals and 2,905 penalty minutes. Yzerman also got to see Verbeek perform as a scout over the four years he Yzerman was a Red Wings vice president.
No immediate confirmation from the Lightning.
