Tampa Bay Lightning GM Yzerman expects quiet weekend in Steven Stamkos, Purcell negotiations

It sounds as if it will be a quiet weekend when it comes to negotiations between the Tampa Bay Lightning and restricted free agent forwards Steven Stamkos and Teddy Purcell. GM Steve Yzerman said Saturday it is more likely he and the agents for both players will pick up talks on Monday.

"All's quiet," Yzerman said. "I don't expect to hear from anybody till Monday. I expect it to be a quiet day today (Saturday) and a quiet day tomorrow (Sunday) as well."

It is believed negotiations with Stamkos, lately, have made progress. But Yzerman said Stamkos' agent, Don Meehan, was tied up Friday in New York with the league's hearing into possible mistakes the Predators made in extending qualifying offers to its restricted free agents, and Yzerman said the plan is for him and Meehan to speak Monday.

As for Purcell, who has a July 20 arbitration hearing, Yzerman said he spoke at length Friday with agent Kent Hughes and expects them to speak again Monday.

"We'd like to get something done," Yzerman said of reaching a deal before the hearing, "but we're prepared to go through the process if we have to."

Purcell, 25, who made $750,000 in 2010-11, had a breakout season with career bests of 17 goals, 34 assists and 51 points in 81 games. He also had five goals, 17 points in 18 playoff games.

In another matter, Yzerman said he and assistant GM Julien BriseBois debated at length about signing free agent goalie Cedrick Desjardins, but a slow-healing right shoulder injury (believed to be a torn labrum) that required surgery and that the Lightning already has five goalies under contract weighed heavily.

"We wish him very well," Yzerman said. "He played well in our organization. There was just that uncertainty on his shoulder, and Colorado stepped up and gave him a good deal. And with the goaltenders we have under contract and to pay a premium for him, it didn't fit into what we were trying to do right now."
