Tampa Bay Lightning roster for Wednesday's preseason opener against the Stars
The Tampa Bay Lightning opens its eight-game preseason schedule (including a scrimmage against AHL Norfolk) with an 8:30 p.m. game against the Stars at American Airlines Center in Dallas. Almost all the big names will not make the trip. Instead, the Martys and Vinnys and Stammers will make their debuts Friday at home against the Thrashers.
Here's who will play against Dallas:
Goaltenders -- Antero Niittymaki, Jaroslav Janus. Defensemen -- Kurtis Foster, David Hale, Victor Hedman, Matt Lashoff, Mike Lundin, Matt Smaby. Forwards -- Brandon Bochenski, Steve Downie, Todd Fedoruk, Jeff Halpern, Blair Jones, Martins Karsums, Zenon Konopka, Brett McLean, Drew Miller, Richard Panik, Paul Szczechura, Dana Tyrell.
Hedman, of course, makes his Lightning debut. The rookie, the No. 2 overall pick of the draft, has had a heavy workload so far, including two scrimmages on Monday. He has been noticeable. He is a lot faster when you see him up close. He also has shown a fine shot, and he wants the puck, constantly banging his stick on the ice to call for it.
Coach Rick Tocchet said Hedman has been one of camp's best players. He also said Niittymaki will play Wednesday's first two periods. Janus, fighting for a contract, will play the third period. Tocchet said he generally is not a fan of splitting time between goalies during games and likely will only do so for the first two games. Mike Smith should see action Friday.
