Tampa Bay Lightning RW Steve Downie says he might play Saturday vs. Sabres

Sorry it took so long to post this about the day's events, but the team practiced late and then there was a wait to get into the hotel in Buffalo because the Senators, who play here tonight, were leaving, the Tampa Bay Lightning was coming in at the same time and the hotel seemed completely overwhelmed.

Anyway, took some time to get to a place to work, and then had to write the story for the paper (you know, my real job), and while a lot of this will be covered in the main story for Saturday, thought the injury update from Thursday would be good to get out there, so ...

Right wing Steve Downie, who took a knee-on-knee hit from Bruins defenseman Dennis Wideman, was still limping, said there was some swelling, but declared he could play Saturday against the Sabres.

Defenseman David Hale has a walking boot on his right foot and is out of Saturday's game. Defenseman Kurtis Foster, whose face hit the glass Thursday after he was hit from behind by Shawn Thornton, "did not feel good at practice," coach Rick Tocchet said, and is very questionable for Saturday.

With Hale and Foster out, expect Mattias Ohlund, out eight games with a sprained left ankle, to get back in the lineup along with Matt Smaby, scratched the past four games. If Downie can't play, right wing Brandon Bochenski will get in. Do not expect any call-ups from AHL Norfolk, which I'm sure is fine with the Admirals, who are in a heated playoff chase of their own.

But back to Downie, who finally saw a video of the hit from Wideman and said, "I didn't like it. ... I had him beat. it was the last play he had or it was going to be a two-on-one the other way."

Added Tocchet: "I'm not saying Wideman tried to do it. It's a reaction, but he has to be responsible, and the NHL will probably take a look at it."

If there is any supplemental discipline for Wideman, or even Thornton, it will be announced before the Bruins next game, Saturday at 1 p.m. vs. the Flames.

Nice weather on this trip so far. It snowed this morning in Boston and is supposed to go down to 17 degrees tonight in Buffalo.
