Tampa Bay Lightning RW Steve Downie suspended by the league for one game for Game 3 hit
Tampa Bay Lightning right wing Steve Downie on Tuesday was suspended one game by the NHL for his Game 3 hit on Pittsburgh's Ben Lovejoy. Downie hit Lovejoy in the chest/shoulder area but clearly left his feet to deliver the substantial blow. Downie would have been called for charging, at least, but the Penguins scored on the delayed penalty.
Pittsburgh's Chris Kunitz also was suspended one game for his hit on Tampa Bay's Simon Gagne.
Lovejoy said after the game he did not think the hit was necessarily dirty. And he reiterated that at Tuesday's practice. But he added, "I don't think you should ever be allowed to leave your feet. Luckily he did get me in the chest. he didn't launch himself and hit me in the head, so thank you for that."
