Tampa Bay Lightning sends Matt Smaby, Ryan Craig to AHL Norfolk

The Tampa Bay Lightning announced Monday it reassigned forward Ryan Craig and defenseman Matt Smaby to AHL Norfolk.

Craig, called up from Norfolk on Nov. 5, played three games with five shots on goal and five penalty minutes while averaging 9:47 of ice time. Because it was fewer than 30 days since his call-up, Craig did not have to go through waivers to be sent down.

Smaby had to agree to a second conditioning assignment. As his agent, Ben Hankinson said in a text message, "Matt needs to play. It's not doing Matt or Tampa Bay any good sitting in the press box every night. The plan is for him to go to Norfolk on conditioning, then come back to play."

Smaby, signed to a new two-year deal during the summer, has not played in any NHL games this season.

With the moves, the Lightning has 21 roster players; two goalies, seven defensemen and 12 forwards. No immediate word on any moves to fill out the 23-player roster.
