The most interesting part of this offseason will no doubt be what the Lightning does with its goaltending. Johan Homqvist will be a great backup but his inconsistency is too much to overcome for a No. 1 job.
Curious, though, as to what you guys think of the plan out there to sign an older free agent such as Dominik Hasek or Curtis Joseph as a one-year stop-gap until Karri Ramo is really ready. The Lightning could have gotten Joseph two years ago for about $900,000 but opted for Sean Burke and his $1.6-million.
Personally, I think it is a good idea to try and create a bridge to the future. You certainly don't want the team trading anymore core people for goalies; not that they could because they don't have much to trade. But you might as well take a chance on a guy with a track record. Yeah, it's a little risky because Hasek and Joseph, just as an example, are older and perhaps prone to injury. But a Holmqvist-Ramo combination, to me, is another year that you have lost the "window of opportunity'' with the Big Four. I include Dan Boyle in that because after next season, if he keeps putting up numbers (let's overlook the playoffs for a second), he will be a very rich guy, and the money won't be coming from the Lightning.
Whatever happens, it will be an interesting offseason.
