Cooper and McLellan discuss World Cup

January

With the Lightning in Edmonton, coach Jon Cooper got together Thursday night with Oilers coach Todd McLellan, whom he'll share a bench with at September's World Cup of Hockey.

Cooper was selected to be on McLellan's staff for the Under-24 stars from North America, the two wanting to compare notes on players they've seen.

"He's a tremendous coach," McLellan said of Cooper. "He brings a youthful energy to the game and to the team, and we are going to be an under-24 team, so we're going to need that. So I think there's a lot of real positive attributes that he can bring to that team and to that staff."

The two coaches have known each other for a while, going back to the late 1980s when McLellan played for the Islanders and Cooper was at Hofstra University.

"I’m really excited about working with him and broaden our horizons a little bit, and spend time with NHL coaches you don’t normally get to spend time with during the regular season," Cooper said. "And none better than Todd, who is one of the best coaches in the National Hockey League."

When asked about the potential candidacy of 20-year-old Lightning wing Jonathan Drouin for the team, McLellan said he hadn't seen him play enough for a true evaluation. "He's a tremendous player."

More from today's skate: There was a larger-than-usual attendance at the optional morning skate, including C Steven Stamkos, the Triplets and all but two defensemen. G Ben Bishop, who was not there, is expected to start tonight. RW Jonathan Marchessault is expected to be scratched, allowing RW Erik Condra, scratched the past three games, to get in the lineup. “Guys are not sitting every single game,” Cooper said. “And (Erik) Condra has sat out the past three and we have to get him back in there. We can’t stop using some of these players who have helped us win games in the past, That’s why different guys are going to be put in different spots, because we need this to work out.’’ D Matt Carle appears to be getting scratched for the second straight game, and seventh time this season..
