Kucherov, Palat out likely through weekend

The Lightning will be short-handed tonight in Vancouver, with wings Nikita Kucherov and Ondrej Palat both out due to injuries.

Coach Jon Cooper doesn't expect them back by Saturday's road trip finale in Edmonton either. Both are considered day-to-day, per GM Steve Yzerman.

"It's been an unfortunate run of late with all the injuries," Cooper said. "If there's ever a time for guys to step up it's right now."

With Palat out, wing Erik Condra didn't get on his scheduled flight Thursday back to AHL Syracuse. Cory Conacher has been getting time on the power play. Brian Boyle stepped up with two goals in Wednesday's 6-3 win over Calgary.

While Palat and Kucherov didn't skate this morning, wing Ryan Callahan (lower body) did. But Cooper said Callahan won't play tonight, either.

"It's tough too, not only are these guys impact players on the ice, but impact guys in the room," Cooper said. "You're taking a lot of voices, a lot of leadership out of the room. It's different role for players on the ice, but in the lockeroom too."

More from morning skate: G Andrei Vasilevskiy will start in net... Cooper said the line of Valtteri Filppula-Jonathan Drouin-Boyle will remain in tact tonight... D Victor Hedman said it was special to play in his 500th career game Wednesday. And it was one of his better ones, with three assists and five blocked shots in 28 minutes."I want to be better, I have to be better," Hedman said. "And I think (Wednesday) was a step in the right direction. I put a lot of pressure on myself to contribute and be a difference-maker. (Wednesday) was a step in the right direction."... The Canucks will induct Mattias Ohlund into their Ring of Honor tonight. Hedman said it's an honor to be present for it because the fellow Swede and former Lightning teammate had a big impact on him his first two years in the league (2009-11). "He was so persistent in his game, battling through injuries, never complained," Hedman said. "He showed me how to be a professional and how to prepare for games and practices, and how to keep a high level throughout a whole season. He's meant a lot to me. Not just on the ice but off the ice as well. How to rpepare, how to be at your best every night."
