Lightning recalling Kristers Gudlevskis
With goalie Ben Bishop hurt, the Lightning is recalling Kristers Gudlevskis to provide some insurance behind Andrei Vasilevskiy for Thursday's game against the Blues.
And potentially longer.
Bishop suffered a lower body injury in Tuesday's game against Detroit and did not return. The Lightning could have an update on the severity of the injury later today. But with Tampa Bay playing in back-to-back games Thursday and Friday before the Christmas break, it needed a second goalie.
While Adam Wilcox has outplayed Gudlevskis with AHL Syracuse this season, Gudlevskis makes sense as the callup. Gudlevskis has NHL experience, starting two regular season games and appearing as backup in the '14 playoffs. With Vasilevskiy expected to start Thursday, and most games beyond if Bishop is out longer, Gudlevskis is better suited for the backup role.
Wilcox has played well this season, a 11-3-1 record and 2.09 goals against average in 15 games (Gudlevskis is 5-4-2, 2.89 in 14 games). Wilcox, a sixth-round pick from 2011 who is in his second pro season, needs to play. And Wilcox can continue to carry the load for the Crunch. Nick Riopel will be Wilcox's backup in Syracuse.
The Syracuse Post-Standard was the first to report Gudlevskis callup.
