Stamkos says contract talks not at a stalemate
The Jonathan Drouin trade request saga has temporarily taken the attention away from the other elephant in the Lightning dressing room: the Steven Stamkos contract situation.
Stamkos, in the final year of his deal, will be an unrestricted free agent this summer, admitted he didn't expect to be sitting here in January without an extension. But Stamkos, who has maintained he wants to stay with the Lightning and thinks a deal can still get done, said calling negotiations a stalemate would not be accurate.
"The lines of communication are always open," Stamkos said. "That's definitely encouraging to hear that."
Other than that, Stamkos said both his agents at Newport Sports and GM Steve Yzerman will continue to keep their conversations private.
"No one really has an idea of what's gone on," Stamkos said with a smile.
