Steven Stamkos leaves game after right leg injury

Lightning captain Steven Stamkos left Tuesday's game midway through the first period with what appeared to be a right knee/leg injury.

The team said Stamkos will not return to the game.

Stamkos got tangled up along the boards with Red Wings wing Gustav Nyquist during a penalty kill shift, and his right leg got tangled in awkard fashion. Stamkos got up, grabbed the bag of his right knee before slowly skating off, not putting any pressure on the leg. He had trouble walking into the dressing room with the training staff.

It likely made Lightning fans hold their collective breath, as Friday marked the three years exactly since Stamkos broke his right leg in a game in Boston.

Stamkos has been playing some of his best hockey, his goal in Tuesday's first period giving him 20 points, which tied for first in the league. His nine goals lead the team. After signing an eight-year, $68 million extension with Tampa Bay June 29, he's been on pace for a career season.
