Valtteri Filppula scratched for missing meeting
For all the players the Lightning got back Wednesday night - including wing Nikita Kucherov - there was one surprising scratch.
Veteran center Valtteri Filppula, 32, was benched against the Canadiens for disciplinary reasons after missing a team meeting Wednesday morning. For Filppula, the team's oldest player and only Stanley Cup champion, it was a strange development. It was the first time in Filppula's four seasons in Tampa Bay he's been a healthy scratch.
Filppula had participated in Wednesday's morning skate, including line rushes with Jonathan Drouin and Brian Boyle. The trio had been Tampa Bay's hottest line in recent weeks, with Filppula entering Wednesday ranked third on the team in points with 24. Filppula was spotted arriving at Amalie Arena in a suit during warmups.
With Filppula out, forward prospect Matthew Peca made his NHL debut.
