Vasilevskiy to start Friday for Crunch, Marchessault recalled
Goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy was sharp in his season debut Wednesday for AHL Syracuse, but will make at least one more start Friday in his conditioning assignment before joining the Lightning.
Vasilevskiy stopped 28 of 29 shots Wednesday for the Crunch in Toronto in a 3-1 win. Crunch coach Rob Zettler said Vasilevskiy would start Friday against Hershey and that's likely the last one, as Syracuse won't play again until Nov. 6.
"I thought he was strong," Zettler said. "His puck-handling wasn't great, but he's had two practices since training camp started, and that was on Monday and Tuesday. So … he was pretty good."
Vasilevskiy could rejoin the Lightning as early as this weekend, which might put him in line to start Sunday's second half of a back-to-back against Carolina. Vasilevskiy has been sidelined since early September due to surgery to remove a blood clot in his collarbone area. He returned to practice Monday and Tuesday.
Also, after Wednesday's game, Zettler confirmed that forward Jonathan Marchessault had been recalled by the Lightning. Marchessault's call-up makes sense with forwards Brian Boyle and Cedric Paquette banged-up, both missing Tuesday's game in St. Louis. Boyle has missed the past three games with an undisclosed injury. Marchessault will join Tampa Bay Thursday, when it faces Colorado.
