Yzerman excited to play in Red Wings alumni game tonight
Lightning general manager Steve Yzerman doesn't skate much these days, partly thanks to the toll his Hall of Fame career took on his knees.
But Yzerman, admittedly "behind" on his training, will be out there tonight playing in the Red Wings-Avalanche alumni game at Coors Field.
"I better have a good warmup," he joked.
Yzerman participated in a Red Wings alumnni game in Detroit in 2014, along with former teammates like Sergei Fedorov. There will be plenty of other Hall of Famers in this game, including Brendan Shanahan, Nicklas Lidstrom, Patrick Roy and Joe Sakic. While the timing isn't ideal - the game takes place just three days before Monday's NHL trade deadline - Yzerman was happy to play again. And he'll be back in his Tampa offices by Saturday afternoon.
"I played in the game in Detroit a couple years ago, and it was really a lot of fun," Yzerman said. "I really enjoyed it. I enjoyed seeing a lot of the guys I hadn't seen in a couple years and just getting back on the ice I really had a lot of fun with it. I got a call last year from Joe Sakic saying they were going to do this game and asked if I would play, and at the time I said, 'Sure I'd love to.' At the time I didn't know it was right before the trade deadline, so I made the commitment. I'm looking forward to it. It's a lot of fun, I get in, get out and get back to Tampa to focus more on the trade deadline again."
Suggested at least there won't be any deals for a two-hour period tonight, Yzerman quipped:
"Well I wouldn't say that. There's between periods, can get stuff done."
