Help Deggans figure out the best TV shows of the past year
It's that time of year where the Television Critics Association picks winners for its annual awards ceremony, held in July in Los Angeles. Longtime blog readers will recall that last year I got to hand a Best Actor award to Michael C. Hall, the star of the show I picked as best series of 2007, Showtime's Dexter.
Our ceremony always has an odd, revenge of the nerds quality, because the winners always come out, and they always seem a bit skeeved at having to spend time with the ink-stained wretches who talk up their shows to the masses (except for Martin Sheen who hung out at one TCA awards show until the hotel closed the reception room).
This time, I need your help to figure out which shows to choose among the finalists selected for our TCA awards. Please drop a comment on this blog post and help me sort through all the choices; feel free to suggest stuff that's not even on the ballot, if you like!
A few notes on the categories: Program of The Year defines a show whose contents transcended television to become a major and commendable cultural phenomenon during the 2007-08 season.
Similarly, the Heritage Award recognizes a long-running program with a track record of high achievement that made a lasting cultural or social impact.
New Program of the Year, conversely, is for a freshman show whose great television work alone made it notable this past season. Outstanding Drama and Comedy are new or established shows that reached the apex of their respective categories during the 2007-08 season.
I can vote for up to two choices in each category. Ladies and Gentlemen, start your commenting -- my deadline is Monday!
