Tampa Bachelor winner Mary Delgado arrested ... again
Wish I could say I saw this one coming.
But when I met the woman who would eventually appear in two editions of ABC's unscripted dating competition The Bachelor, Mary Delgado came off as a beautiful, down-to-earth woman with traditional values -- a former Tampa Bay Buccaneers cheerleader who graduated from Hillsborough High School after her parents brought her and four siblings from Cuba as children.
Back then, she seemed a little wary of the attention, but up for trying something new and exciting. But life after winning The Bachelor in 2005 hasn't always been kind: according to supreme gossipers TMZ.com, Delgado was arrested Saturday in Del Rio, Texas, for public drunkenness, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.
According to TMZ and the Associated Press, Delgado refused to leave a bar and then got belligerent when police moved in to arrest her.
This isn't the first time she has had such a scrape with the law; in November 2007, Delgado was arrested
here in Pinellas County for domestic battery (mug shot at left) after allegedly attacking her Bachelor-won fiancee, Byron Velvick. Back then, the couple told Inside Edition the fight happened after watching an episode of The Bachelor at a friend's home and disagreeing on whether to leave.
"Just because you met on a reality show, got engaged on this beautiful incredible setting doesn't mean that we're Prince Charming or Beautiful Princess," Velvick said then. "It's nothing like that. It's just a real couple going through real things."
Though the two said back then they expected to get married this month, there's no word on whether the nuptials happened.
The last time I spoke at length with Delgado and Velvick was in 2006, when she was helping me decipher the racially segregated season of Survivor, when CBS's reality competition divided teams by race and ethnicity for the beginning of the contest.
Helpful and cheery, she seemed a long way from the sad figure in these mugshots, traveling with professional fisherman Velvick to the competitions where he earned his living. Just another reminder of how so-called reality TV shows rarely live up to their name.
