Jonas Brothers come to press tour: Beatlemania meets middle-aged journalists
LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- They were nearly out the door, fleeing from a crowd of tape-recording
journalists, when the plaintive voice of a fan screamed their names.
At that moment, despite the fact that they were late for a taping, despite the fact that dozens of TV writers were nipping at their heels and despite pleas from their handlers and bodyguards, Joe, Nick and Kevin Jonas stopped and delivered pictures and autographs for a growing crowd.
Hey, it's their job.
And after 40 minutes watching the brothers interact with the press here, it's obvious these guys take their job very seriously. Nick, the youngest Jonas, is paradoxically the most mature, sounding a bit like the band manager in answers and confidently predicting that he will return to the White House as the occupant years after they perform for Obama's inauguration next week.
The new Disney Channel show they were promoting, JONAS, comes off like an odd mix of the Beatles' Help! and The Monkees. And though some critics wondered if it would make them less cool to record buyers, the Disney demographic accounts for millions of records and feels a bit removed from the mainstream -- I'm sure they're thinking, if Miley Cyrus can pull it off, they can, too.
There's little doubt the show will be a hit, despite the dorky device of not actually using the brothers' last names for the characters. Instead, the band's name comes from the street where they live. Ugh.
Check these pictures for a sense of the pandemonium these guys can unleash -- even among a crowd of 120 jaded journalists.
