The definition of irony: an NPR host losing job to cutbacks interviews journalism advocate about news cutbacks
In today's topsy-turvy media environment, the irony just gets thicker and thicker.
I recently stumbled on this interview with National Association of Black Journalists president Barbara Ciara on National Public Radio's show News and Notes. At first, I was intrigued because few journalism outlets have looked at the impact widespread job reductions in 2008 might have on the diversity of media.
But it soon became apparent that this was an oddly ironic moment: NPR cutbacks have resulted in the cancellation of News and Notes; the show is due to leave the air in March. Though Ciara only briefly alludes to this at the end of her interview -- and this clip I'm linking to doesn't give any more explanation -- News and Notes is a victim of the very trend it is talking about on the show.
Expect more moments like this, as news outlets are challenged to cover the very trends that are forcing them to make substantial changes to their operations.
