Star magazine alleges Biggest Loser is a bigger fraud

Biggestloser-hibbard Star magazine has an eye-opening report about NBC's unscripted weight-loss competition the Biggest Loser, mashing together provocative comments from trainer Jillian Michaels and former contestant Kai Hibbard to paint an unflattering picture of the show.

Hibbard says she seriously hurt her immune system by using unsafe methods to lose weight, throwing off her metabolism enough that she gained 31 pounds of her 118-pound weight loss back just by drinking water.

The story passes along allegations of contestants using diuretics, intentional dehydration and more to get down their weight, saying the show's very first winner, Ryan Benson, began urinating blood in the run up to the show's finale.

I've written before about some health professionals' problems with the show, which they fret sets unrealistic expectations and forces morbidly obese people to launch into grueling workouts after years of inactivity.

Biggestloser-KaiHibbard Now Hibbard, a contestant on the show's third season, is becoming more vocal about her misgivings regarding the show. She told the New York Times last year that contestants drank as little water as possible 24 hours before weigh-ins and worked out in layers of clothing when cameras were not filming.

She's also spoken out about the 2007 on camera proposal by contestant Marty Wolff to Amy Hildreth, saying that Wolff cheated on his wife with Hildreth during the competition -- only to see NBC treat their romance as a promotable, admirable occurrence.

If Hibbard keeps speaking out, it should make this season's cycle -- with its largest contestants ever -- a much more interesting event.
