Bright House Networks' local cable newschannel Bay News 9 has won a national Edward R. Murrow Award as best website among large market TV stations, beating rivals in Florida and across the nation.

Among all the local news operations across the country honored with Murrows this year, Bay News 9 was the only Florida outlet. NBC News earned the most among the biggest outlets, with five awards.

The Radio and Television Digital News Association announced the Murrow winners today, honoring 59 news organizations with 89 awards. This year, the award honored audio and video created solely for online outlets for the first time, recognizing the increasing impact online news efforts have on the world's overall news mix.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL— Baynews9.com, the website for Tampa Bay’s local cable news channel, has won a national Edward R. Murrow Award for best website among large market television stations.

Baynews9.com won a regional Murrow award earlier this year, competing with websites throughout Florida, Georgia, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands.  The website previously received the regional Murrow award back in 2008 and was honored by CableFax with a national award for Best Overall Website for regional/local programmers.

Baynews9.com launched in September 1999. Since then, the website has become a popular destination for local news and especially weather.  The station’s weather radar, Klystron 9, is the most-searched for term in the Bay area according to a survey by the St. Petersburg Times.  

Since 1971, the Radio-Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) has honored outstanding achievements in electronic journalism with its Edward R. Murrow Awards. The award is named after broadcast pioneer and American journalistic icon, Edward R. Murrow (1908-1965), renowned by many for his courage, honesty and relentless pursuit of excellence.
