Tampa, Largo breweries team up for Krispy Kreme doughnut beer

What can unite two beermakers from opposite sides of Tampa Bay?

Doughnuts, that's what.

Tampa's Hidden Springs Ale Works and Largo's Arkane Aleworks are teaming up for a Russian imperial stout brewed with Krispy Kreme doughnuts. Be still our beating hearts! (No, seriously, a Russian imperial stout brewed with actual Krispy Kremes might ACTUALLY stop our beating hearts.)

Hidden Springs posted a photo of the brewing process last week. They brewed two batches, each using two dozen doughnuts — one cream-filled, one just glazed. The 12.5 percent ABV collaboration is their entry into the booming niche of pastry-inspired beers, said Hidden Springs founder and brewery Josh Garman.

"It's going to be roasty, chocolatey, hopefully with some doughnut flavor," he said. "We're actually hoping to get some of the glaze from the Krispy Kremes to come through."

Both breweries have used plenty of sweet and unusual flavors in their brews. Arkane has brewed with Peeps and 7-Eleven doughnuts, and once created a beer inspired by Skittles. Two of Hidden Springs' signature brews are Peanut Butter Deja Moo, a milk stout with chocolate and peanut butter; and Brawndo, a bright green, Gatorade-iunfused Berliner weiss. On Monday, Hidden Springs brewers were back at Arkane brewing another forthcoming collaboration, a sour breakfast beer with notes of cherry and coffee.

While you probably won't be able to get the beer at actual Krispy Kremes, Garman said the doughnut maker is on board with the concept, reaching out to offer their support. It'll be available on draft and in bottles ($25) by next month.

Now all it needs is a name.

"We have some we're kicking around, but we'll come up with some sort of funny name for it," Garman said.

What do you think? Is Krispy Kreme doughnut beer a great idea? Or the GREATEST idea?
