Ax throwing trend arrives in St. Pete via Ferg’s Sports Bar

Gone are the days when St. Petersburg residents must travel across Tampa Bay to visit one of Tampa’s two ax throwing establishments.

Soon you’ll be able to hurl axes toward a wooden target at Ferg’s Sports Bar & Grill, which sounds like a fine way to take out some frustration (or celebrate a win!) after a Rays game at nearby Tropicana Field.

St. Pete Axe & Ale is set to celebrate its grand opening on June 13, which the proprietors say is International Axe Throwing Day (and who am I to say otherwise?).

Unlike other Tampa Bay ax throwing ranges, Axe & Ale, which is operating on the south patio at Ferg’s through a partnership with the sports bar, says it will be serving a full food and drink menu, including alcohol.

The Axe Throwing Day grand opening event will feature “axe throwing enthusiasts from around the globe” plus allow first-timers to try the sport, which is scored similarly to darts.

Ax throwing will be free from 5 to 10 p.m. that day, and there will be drink specials and prize giveaways.

Throwers must be at least 18, wear closed toe shoes and sign a waiver.

Though they’re celebrating the grand opening on June 13, Axe & Ale has been open for about a week. They take advance reservations on stpeteaxeandale.com. Reservations are $60 per hour.

If the lanes are open, they’ll also do walk-ups that cost $10 per game, which is 10 throws, plus two practice throws.
