Losers of the week: Norm Macdonald has much to apologize for, Henry Cavill out as Superman

Here's some entertainment (and entertaining) news you might've missed this week.

Norm Macdonald keeps putting his foot in his mouth

Norm Macdonald on Thursday issued his latest in a string of apologies for continuing to put his foot in his mouth.

The "Saturday Night Live" veteran, whose promotional appearances for his upcoming Netflix talk show have turned into an apology tour, expressed regret on The View on Thursday morning for the Down syndrome comment he made on The Howard Stern Show the day before.

That ill-timed comment, of course, came as Macdonald was elaborating on his earlier apology regarding statements he made about the #MeToo movement and victims of sexual misconduct.

"It's always bad when you have to apologize for the apology," Macdonald said Thursday.

Addressing his comments from Wednesday's Stern interview — when he said "You'd have to have Down syndrome to not feel sorry" for harassment victims — the comedian told The View panelists he realized that he had done "something unforgivable."

During the exchange with Stern, the "Roseanne" writer said he regretted agreeing to the Hollywood Reporter's interview, which touched off the backlash on Tuesday. Macdonald said he was "happy the #MeToo movement has slowed down a little bit." He criticized a lack of "forgiveness" for the performers who had "all their work in their entire life being wiped out in a single day, a moment," such as his former boss Roseanne Barr, disgraced comedian Louis C.K. and TV personality Chris Hardwick.

Madconald's comments in that interview led to him being bumped from Tuesday's episode of "The Tonight Show."

The fate of his Netflix series, "Norm Macdonald Has a Show," which debuts Friday, appears to be unaffected. Macdonald told Stern he spoke with Ted Sarandos, Netflix's chief content officer, about the interview and "he knows I'm a good guy."

Superman no more: Henry Cavill is out, according to reports

Warner Bros. reportedly is parting ways with its present Man of Steel, Henry Cavill.

Cavill, the British actor who has played Superman in three critically underwhelming films since 2013, will surrender the red-and-blue costume, the Hollywood Reporter was the first to report Wednesday, while noting that neither Cavill nor the studio had confirmed the exit.

Variety, meanwhile, reported that "Cavill's future as Superman in the DC Extended Universe is cloudy," as Warner Bros. shifts "its attention to developing a Supergirl movie."

Domestically, none of Cavill's DCEU films has topped $340 million at the box office. The most successful DCEU release in North America – as box-office champ and cultural phenomenon – remains last year's "Wonder Woman" ($412.6 million).

And now for some good news: Kevin Hart played principal at Dallas school this week

Actor Kevin Hart has surprised the students of a Dallas high school by dropping in to be interim principal for a day.

Hart told hundreds of cheering students Wednesday at Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts that under his leadership they would be eating "chicken nuggets every day."

The comedian encouraged students at the arts-focused magnet school to believe in their talents and not be discouraged if they are rejected. He said they know better than anyone what they are capable of doing.

Hart's day at school was arranged to promote his new movie "Night School," scheduled to open in theaters Sept. 28. The movie about adults attending night school to earn their GED certificates also features Tiffany Haddish.
