ABC Action News names Seattle executive as news director
Doug Culver, an assistant news director at KIRO-TV in Seattle, has been named news director at WFTS-Ch. 28 in Tampa, effective today. Culver replaced Chris Jadick, who left the television business to head up communications for a suite of companies owned by a Tampa lawyer.
Considering Jadick announced his departure in the last week of November, this is a pretty swift hire. And the moves raised all the expected rumors and speculation that Jadick was pushed out by new general manager Rich Pegram. But both Pegram and Jadick have said that was not the case, and nobody blames a news professional for reconsidering a career in the game these days.
Here's the WFTS release:
ABC Action News, WFTS, today named Doug Culver the station’s News Director, effective December 11th, 2008. Culver’s background includes positions as Assistant News Director at KIRO-TV in Seattle, Executive Producer at KNBC-TV in Los Angeles, and various leadership positions in the news departments of KABC-TV (Los Angeles), KTTV-TV (Los Angeles) and WJLA-TV (Washington, D.C.).
“We are delighted to have someone of Doug’s caliber and history of success joining us here in Tampa,” said Rich Pegram, Vice President and General Manager of WFTS. Culver’s stations received many prestigious national and regional awards during his tenures. KIRO-TV was awarded two national Edward R. Murrow Awards from the Radio/Television News Director Association for “Overall Excellence” and “Investigative Reporting”. The station also won numerous “Best Newscast” and other coverage honors from the National Headliner Awards, the RTNDA, and the Emmy Awards. “Seattle is known as a very innovative and sophisticated news market, and for Doug’s station to be chosen the best speaks loudly to the quality of his work,” Pegram continued.
In Los Angeles, Culver’s stations also received numerous “Best Newscast” awards, including Emmy Awards for Overall Coverage and coverage of the bombing at the Atlanta Olympics. His newscast earned a Golden Mike Award for coverage of the OJ Simpson verdict in Los Angeles.
Culver is a graduate of the University of Southern California. “I am excited to be joining the team at ABC Action News,” said Culver. “Tampa is a great area and I have long respected the commitment to local news and community service of the E. W. Scripps Company. The station has a terrific team, and I look forward to building on the momentum it has established.”
