American Idol chat begins tonight ... with new host and a twist

Judgestiedup I could say it's our way of honoring all the changes under way at American Idol with our own big change.

Or I could call our onetime Idol chat host Sean Daly the Simon Cowell  of Timesland -- an irreplaceable talent convinced of his own greatness who simply had to find new challenges (just kidding...and it's better than calling him the Paula Abdul of this scenario).

But the bottom line is that our own Sultan of Snark has decided that he spent WAY too much time soaking up Adam Lambert gossip and complaints about Kara DioGuardi while leading last season's American Idol chats, so he's moving on.

Since I tend to post on The Feed about Idol at key points anyway, we thought it best to move the Idol chats here. I won't be as active a participant as Sean -- I expect to post something to get everybody started and chime in occasionally if the action warrants.

Fortunately, the Idol gods have given us so much to chew on.

The big question: What's Idol going to be like, given that everybody knows its biggest star is leaving as this season ends?

Idol10group Cowell and company are taping the Hollywood Round episodes this week.

So we won't see new judge Ellen DeGeneres -- or the dynamic between everyone now that Cowell has announced his departure -- until Feb. 9.

But Abdul was already gone by the time tonight's audition footage was filmed; in tonight's episodes Victoria "Posh Spice" Beckham helps with the judging in Boston.

Let's all have fun reading the tea leaves, trying to guess the exact moment in the audition madness that Cowell decided he was blowing this popsicle stand -- no matter how many money trucks Fox backs up.

Let the snarkiness begin!
