American Idol to reveal part of Top 24 on Tuesday's show
Did St. Petersburg native Michael Lynche make American Idol's cut after missing the birth of his first child to audition in Hollywood? Was Tampa resident Janell Wheeler impressive enough to survive Simon Cowell and Ellen DeGeneres?
American Idol viewers may learn the answer to these questions a day earlier than planned. For the first time, the show will reveal some of the semifinalists who survive their Hollywood Week auditions before the end of the episodes centered on the Los Angeles tryouts.
Fox said today that judges will reveal some of the top 24 semi-finalists during Tuesday's two-hour episode, breaking a longstanding tradition of revealing all the semi-finalists who survived Hollywood Week at once.
Today's announcement said: "On Tuesday evening, the remaining contestants will take the stage to perform their final solo number in front of Simon, Ellen, Kara and Randy in hopes of singing their way into the Top 24. Following these performances, the judges will deliberate, and for the first time in IDOL history, will announce some of the Top 24 semifinalists."
Months ago, Fox said all the semi-finalists would be revealed on Wednesday, Feb. 17. According to a schedule released by the network last year, viewers will begin voting next week on contestants.
I wouldn't be surprised if Fox held the announcement until it could see how strong NBC's Olympics coverage was doing.
Certainly, the added competition from a singular sporting event will provide a unique impact on Idol's viewership numbers.
