Amid Tampa Bay Buccaneers blackout, WTSP-Ch. 10 to air tape-delayed Thursday preseason game three times
Local CBS affiliate WTSP-Ch. 10 is making up for the blackout which will keep it from airing Thursday's Tampa Bay Buccaneers preseason football game against the New England Patriots live, airing the contest three different times over the next three days.
Because Thursday's game failed to sell out 72 hours before kickoff, WTSP won't be allowed to show the telecast in progress. So the game will air at 11:30 p.m. Thursday, 8 p.m. Friday and noon Saturday, to ensure any curious fans have a shot at seeing the action (it also ensures advertisers have multiple shots at snagging the same viewers they might have gotten in one airing).
WTSP also has a backup plan for the Aug. 27 home preseason game against Miami, which also looks like it will be blacked out. If the game doesn't sell out in time, the station will air that game at 1 a.m. and 9 a.m. Aug. 28, and noon Aug. 28 on their secondary digital channel.
At this rate, it seems the only preseason game WTSP will get to air live is the Sept. 1 contest against the Washington Redskins. Last season, the Buccaneers were the only NFL team to have all 10 home games blacked out in preseason and regular season.
Even though the blackouts seem to reduce the once considerable value of preseason football broadcasts, WTSP general manager Ken Tonning expressed confidence in the agreement.
