Barbara Walters gets big post-verdict interview, nabbing Jose Baez for World News, Nightline and more

While every news outlet in media scrambles to nail down interviews with people connected to the Casey Anthony trial -- this morning's Today show felt like a hourlong Anthony special -- ABC's Barbara Walters sails in with a big get, securing an interview with defense attorney Jose Baez.

Fox News anchor Geraldo Rivera did speak with Baez hours after the verdict Tuesday. But Walters seems to have nailed the first extended sit-down with Baez, creating an interview scheduled to air in World News Tonight, a primetime show and on Nightline tonight, then on The View and Good Morning America Thursday.

So far, Baez has struck a concilatory tone, in contrast to the pugnacious attitude of co-counsel Cheney Mason (frankly, I wonder if Mason expected to lose and was still stuck in bitter mode Tuesday despite a victory). Well aware that he's in the middle of a life-changing moment, Baez seems to be moving carefully and graciously, ensuring he's going to have a serious career in years to come.

Below, is ABC's press release about the interview and Rivera's talk with Baez:

Barbara Walters will sit down with Casey Anthony’s lead lawyer Jose Baez in his first network interview since the jury acquitted his client of murder, manslaughter and child endangerment charges yesterday in Orlando, Florida.

In a wide-ranging interview, Walters will ask Baez about his courtroom strategy, his client’s demeanor, the reasons he thinks she was found not guilty, how he was ceaselessly second-guessed by trial watchers and the media during the six weeks of testimony, and his new found fame, among other topics.

Portions of the interview will air tonight on “World News with Diane Sawyer” (6:30 – 7:00 pm ET/PT), “Casey Anthony Not Guilty: Inside the Bombshell Verdict” a “Primetime Nightline” Special (10:00 – 11:00 pm ET/PT) and again tomorrow, Thursday, July 7 on “Good Morning America” (7:00 – 9:00 am ET/PT) and “The View” (11:00 am – 12:00 pm ET/PT).

Interview excerpts will also air across ABC News’ platforms, including ABC News Radio, ABC News NOW,, and ABC NewsOne.
