Betty White's best Saturday Night Live Skit: Her dusty muffin
When showbiz legend Betty White talked to reporters about hosting Saturday Night Live, she kept stressing how scared she was and how she had turned the gig down several times because she didn't feel hip enough.
Which just proves how canny White is, even at age 88. Because her raucous turn as host Saturday belied any fear or fumbling, capitalizing on her beloved status to turn White into a ribald, sizzling hot stream of hilariously inappropriate punch lines.
It's the classic rule of success: under-promise and over-deliver.
From her wisecracks about the Facebook campaign that landed her the gig in the first place -- "Facebook just sounds like a drag. In my day, seeing pictures of someone's vacation was considered punishment." -- to her turns as MacGuyver parody MacGruber's foul-mouthed grandma, White stole the show at every turn. Said scene stealing came despite sharing the stage with some of SNL's funniest females, including Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph and Rachel Dratch.
It was the funniest SNL since Fey herself returned as host months ago and a potent argument for getting crack showbiz veterans with sharp comic timing in the hosting mix.
Wonder what Abe Vigoda's doing these days?
