Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo, Blake Shelton and Adam Levine sing "Crazy" in NBC's preview of The Voice

christina_aguilera_the_voice_nbc.pngWhen I asked X Factor mastermind Simon Cowell about NBC's new singing competition The Voice, he chortled at the show's oversized chairs for its star coaches and blind auditions.

But it's clear now that executive producer Mark Burnett (Survivor) has formatted this show to be the anti-Idol, from refusing to put bad contestants in the competition to having his four superstar coaches pick the artists they will mentor without seeing them.

nbc-the-voice-282x300.jpgClearly, Burnett's been paying attention. My biggest complaints about shows such as American Idol and America's Got Talent, is their distressing habit of advancing performers based on everything but what happens when they step in front of a microphone.

And there's one other difference The Voice's producers have emphasized: Their star experts are superstar recording artists right now. (as opposed to a certain blockbuster singing show where at least two of the three judges haven't been on the charts for a while).

Perhaps to drive that point home, NBC has released a 12-minute preview of the voice featuring Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green, Blake Shelton and Maroon 5's Adam Levine all jamming on Green's hit Crazy.

The not-so-subtle message: Let's see Randy, J. Lo and Steven try this.

If Idol weren't inexplicably gaining ratings steam, I might say it has a huge threat on it's hands. (I'm also worried that NBC isn't releasing a full review DVD to critics before its debut Tuesday). Still, this preview below looks pretty interesting; see it before it airs tonight before Jay Leno's Tonight Show rerun.

Might be time for Cowell and the Idol crew to start looking over their shoulders.
