Daily Show's last stand in Tampa lampoons Eastwood, sticks Aasif Mandvi's homecoming on the web only

mandvi3.jpgLocal fans hoping to see Tampa-raised correspondent Aasif Mandvi showcased when The Daily Show came to town  had a bit of disappointment coming.

Turns out, the show didn't feature Mandvi much during its four-day stint in Tampa covering the Republican National Convention, taking the pre-taped bit where he tours the area re-visiting old haunts and sticking it on the Internet as a web exclusive -- declining to air it during the actual show.

"The a--holes on this show are not going to air it, but I convinced them to play it for you," Mandvi told the crowd at the show's Friday taping, which burst into applause. "But...you're not going to be happy about it."

The Daily Show had an uneven time in Tampa, opening strong with bits making fun of Tampa's heat, decaying neighborhoods and giant cockroaches. But subsequent shows weren't quite as funny, and the comics seemed to have little to say about the Tampa Bay area beyond joking about the strip clubs, humidity and heat.

jon3-300x193.jpg"Everything Aasif learned, he learned from this swamp," correspondent John Oliver told the crowd Friday, as the show's fake reporters came onstage to take questions before launching a show filled with bits taped at the RNC.

"Busch Gardens -- that's a great name for a strip club," correspondent Jason Jones offered. "You can get a lap dance anywhere in Tampa. I got one at a Walgreens."

Stewart also greeted the audience Friday, assuring them the next time the show would come to Tampa, it would be in the winter. "You live in America's penis," he told one fan. "It is hotter than a gorilla's anus in here."

See Mandvi's piece below; in the video below his story, look close when correspondent Al Madrigal tries to get a reluctant Asian American guy to talk for his piece on looking for minorities at the DNC; it's former Tampa Bay Times education reporter Ron Matus.
